MarketSurge vs TradingView for stock research

Choose MarketSurge when IBD research and ratings are central to your stock selection. Choose TradingView when you need custom Pine Script calculations or research across several markets. Both offer technical charts and screening; the decision is whether your workflow depends on proprietary research or programmable rules.

Compare research, screening and charts

MarketSurge is the current name of MarketSmith. Its app listing describes earnings and sales history, institutional ownership, industry group metrics, stock lists and alerts. TradingView combines market charts with financial fields and separate screening tools. Match those outputs to your research task.

A repeatable growth-stock research comparison

Use this proposed comparison during a trial. It has not been run as a head-to-head test, and there is no predetermined number of matching stocks. A useful output is a saved candidate list with the reasons each company passed your filters.

  • Start with the same market, listing universe and review date. Record whether each result uses a completed daily bar or live intraday data.
  • In MarketSurge, record the chosen list or screen and the IBD ratings used. Keep those values separate from your own financial thresholds.
  • In TradingView Stock Screener, select available earnings growth, revenue growth, liquidity and trend fields. Record the reporting period and filter settings.
  • Review the same candidate charts and financial reports. Explain differences in eligibility or data before concluding that one screen found better stocks.

Chart flexibility has changed since MarketSmith

The current MarketSurge technical-studies guide includes MACD, Bollinger Bands, VWAP, ATR and other studies. Its product announcement describes customizable candles, bars and scatterplots. Older comparisons that reduce MarketSurge to fixed charts miss this update. Check the specific study and settings you use rather than choosing from a generic indicator count.

  • Pattern detection is an analytical output. A highlighted base or price zone does not establish that a trade will succeed.
  • For cross-platform checks, align sessions, price adjustments and the data feed. TradingView says its default US stock feed is Cboe and can differ from primary-exchange data.
  • If your task requires a proprietary rating or list, a visually similar chart does not demonstrate an equivalent replacement.

A relative-strength line is a separate calculation

The complete Pine Script v6 example below divides the chart price by a benchmark price. A rising ratio means the chart symbol has gained relative to that benchmark over the interval. It compares two price series; it does not calculate an IBD rating, score every stock, detect a CAN SLIM base or provide a trading recommendation.

Educational indicator. Use matching sessions and currencies, inspect completed bars, and check the chosen data feed. Missing benchmark bars remain gaps; the live bar can change. The average length counts bars on the current chart timeframe.pine

int averageLength = input.int(50, "Average length", minval = 1)
float benchmarkClose = request.security(benchmark, timeframe.period, close, gaps = barmerge.gaps_on)
float ratio = not na(benchmarkClose) and benchmarkClose != 0 ? close / benchmarkClose : na

Alerts, simulations and live orders are different

TradingView documents Pine strategies as broker-emulator simulations. Its strategy FAQ states that Pine cannot place orders through Trading Panel brokers or the built-in paper-trading account. Webhooks send alert messages to a configured endpoint; order execution requires a separate integration with its own permissions and failure handling.

  • MarketSurge documents notification alerts. The official sources reviewed here do not establish a public strategy API, automated broker routing or a programmable backtest engine. Verify those requirements with the vendor before subscribing.
  • TradingView chart trading through supported brokers is a different workflow from executing Pine strategy code.
  • A webhook can fail or arrive without a usable order. TradingView requires two-factor authentication for webhook alerts and documents delivery constraints.
  • Backtests need explicit costs, fills, dates and risk rules. This comparison provides no evidence that either platform improves investment returns.

Decide whether one subscription covers the job

Trial the workflow that currently causes friction. If it is finding candidates with your preferred research inputs, assess list quality and data coverage. If it is expressing a custom chart rule, inspect the calculation and its limits. Using both products is an option, but this page has not tested a productivity benefit.

  • Keep the ticker, exchange, review date and reasons for inclusion when moving a candidate to another watchlist.
  • Check whether the second subscription adds a required output or duplicates charts you already have.
  • Pineify can continue supported screening or research tasks. It does not reproduce proprietary IBD data or replace either subscription automatically.
